IGN Pre-E3 2009: MySims Racing Hands-on
E3 is soon to kick off…IGN is getting a head start with a hands on demonstration of MySims Racing!
In addition, you can select various vehicle types — small, medium and large classes. The small ones are quicker and the large ones slower, but heavier (and therefore a force to be reckoned with on the tracks). Along the way, you can upgrade your engine, fame, handling and specials. You earn blueprints for special parts that you can build after you’ve completed certain race challenges. You can alter your car’s body, front bumper, headlights and grill, hood ornament (like, for example, a giant dinosaur head), side mirrors, rear accessory, rear taillights, back bumper, wheels and horn. Then, you can go into the paint shop and set your colors and add decals, of which there are about 18 available to start. There are thousands of different personalization options for vehicles, according to EA.
Although EA claims that it didn’t just want to slap the MySims label on a similar racing experience, from what we can tell, the game blatantly copies Mario Kart, which isn’t necessarily a bad thing. The downer is that MySims Racing doesn’t feature either an online mode or leaderboards, which Kart has in spades on Wii. (It does allow you to save your created Sims and vehicles to the Wii remote so that you can bring your controller to a friend’s house and play, though — that’s something.) The Sims experience is recognizable before matches — all the customization, etc. — but once the races start, it feels and plays like Kart, from the arcade-paced speed to the over-the-top track designs and mid-race bonuses. Even the control schemes are similar.
