An Interview With Will Wright on HiveMind

Reuters with Will Wright on HiveMind, his controversial (can we call it controversial?) upcoming project. A true bandwagoner everybody is becoming these days.

Q: What did you learn from past games like “The Sims” and “Spore” that you applied to “HiveMind”?

A: “Those games were in some sense exploring the idea of becoming more personal and involving the player in a very creative role. In ‘The Sims’ people were crafting doppelgangers of their real life, their friends, their house, and then they experimented with things. ‘Spore’ was a more fantastical environment that offered higher-level creative tools. Both of those games showed me that when something is personal to a player, they’re willing to invest in the experience. And the more emotionally attached they get, the more they want to share it with their friends and family.”

Q: Where did the idea for “HiveMind” come from?

A: “I’ve had a couple of experiences where I realized that I’m surrounded by opportunities in life that I’m not aware of. Every now and then I trip over one of these experiences — like a classic car show I happened upon in a Burbank Shoney’s parking lot. I realized that we could build a system — if we had a situational awareness about you, about who you are, where you are, what time of day it is, how much money is in your pocket, what’s the weather like, what your interests are, etc. — that could make your life much more interesting.

Q: How would a game experience work?

A: “If we had that much situational awareness about you and at the same time we were building this very high-level map of the world, and I don’t just mean where Starbuck’s is, but all sorts of things like historical footnotes and people you might want to meet. I started thinking about games that we can build that would allow us to triangulate you in that space and build that deep situational awareness. There will be all types of games, but the key will be focusing the experiences, including multiplayer, within the real world and away from the fictional world that games currently invest in.”

Q: What are the personal privacy challenges that exist with creating a game around players’ personal data?

A: “That’s something that obviously they would opt in for, so it’s not like you’d be stealing the info. They would want to play the game. It’s the same thing with the ARGs that are out there. We need to get the players on our side. Every time we gather some data about them, we need to reflect it back to an experience that got much better so they understand. Once we get them on board, hopefully they’re very forthcoming and they get more involved in terms of how they’re feeling and what they’re doing. The system can actually be used by them and benefit them with the more accurate data it collects.”

Q: Will “HiveMind” expand beyond gaming to include television?

A: “We’re finding television to be amazingly synergistic in some ways with this idea. We did do one television show, ‘Bar Karma’, that ran for a season on Current TV last year. It used crowd sourcing and the community we built came up with everything from the concept and storylines every week to helping cast the show with real actors.”

Q: Will you be pushing this type of interactivity with your new TV projects?

A: “‘Bar Karma’ was an interesting hybrid between crowd sourcing and professional television, but we learned a lot about how you get communities involved in creative activities. That will definitely feed into ‘HiveMind’ because there is going to be a very strong community component to this. I think crowd sourcing is one of the most interesting tools in our arsenal now as a designer.”

Q: The fact that new TVs offer Internet connectivity should help with this endeavor, right?

A: “It’s kind of remarkable. I’ve set up a couple of PCs and a few TVs over the last couple of years. Buying a new television and setting it up is far more complicated now than buying a computer and setting it up.”

Again kudos to iSims for the titbit. And… discuss!

HiveMind and Will Wright — The Sims Online Reprise

Some disclaimers:

  • Not in-game footage.
  • ‘Existentialism’ is not an upcoming EP. It is simply NMA (the video creator)’s way of poking fun at what Will is trying to add to his games.
  • Now that we have the interview most of these lines come from (above this post), everything should be much clearer. So check that right after, or first.

Will Wright is at it again with something called ‘HiveMind’. Wait watch the video first…

I know what your thinking. But not to worry, I can assure you this isn’t actual in game footage. In fact, it is simply NMA’s way of telling news stories — by putting them in their fun animation form and adding narration, such narration you can find reiterated below for those hard of hearing or youtube:

Will Wright is the designer behind successful life simulation game The Sims. Wright’s next creation, HiveMind, aims to take the player into the real world.

Wright describes HiveMind as a group of cross-platform, cross-media online applications. It is designed to turn everyday life into an interactive gaming experience.

This is done by tapping into personal information from social media networking sources such as Facebook and Twitter and layering this with information about a person’s physical surroundings.

The result is an alternative reality game. HiveMind will learn your wishes and map these to the people and world around you. Wright calls this “situational awareness.”

He got the idea when stumbling upon a car show he hadn’t known about. Wright says HiveMind can make real life richer by allowing players to serendipitously discover new opportunities and experiences.

“I started thinking about games that we can build that would allow us to triangulate you in that space and build that deep situational awareness,” says Wright. “There will be all types of games, but the key will be focusing the experiences, including multi-player, within the real world and away from the fictional world that games currently invest in.”

This jolly good video found by the news ends of iSims. Have fun discussing this…

Showtime Also Available in Base Game Bundle — The Sims 3 + Showtime

Foreword: You know how you get confused sometimes reading a protracted (long) news text, thinking this must be Jud, and then sort of not surprised it isn’t when you realise it isn’t (you know, style differences). Yeah. This is one of those articles… that isn’t Jud.

Back in 2011 (seems long ago when I say it like that) my grandma sent me The Sims 3 + Pets when all I really asked for was Pets. Seeing as I already had ‘The Sims 3′, let alone in Collectors Edition, I decided I might host I give-away. But I didn’t. That’s not the point of the story. EA’s trapping grandmas the world round in a hustle yet again with The Sims 3 + Showtime. Bundling de novo the base game and the latest EP. We know this because iSims found this on the Italian Amazon:

You can look forward to it in Amazons other than the Italian one soon, but for now, it lays I think confirmed* under the fallibility of Amazon.

Will Wright Joins Linden Labs Board of Directors

Well this is a very interesting turn of events: Will Wright, “game god” creator of the groundbreaking Sims franchise, along with Spore and SimCity, recently joined the Board of Linden Lab, developer of Second Life. His name and stellar biography is now on the company’s site. This isn’t a totally surprising turn of events: Rod Humble, who became Linden’s CEO this year, is a longtime veteran of Electronic Arts, home to Wright’s first game studio, Maxis, and led development on The Sims 3, the latest addition to a franchise that’s sold 140 million copies since launching in 2000. What’s this mean for the future of Second Life? Too soon to tell — I hope to interview Wright about it soon — but I suspect this means a continued move to make Second Life more engaging and mass market, like The Sims, while still fostering diverse user-generated content, like The Sims. I spoke with Wright in 2002 about his original vision for The Sims Online, which ultimately wasn’t realized in the actual game, but here’s what he told me then: “I think another approach to [MMOs] is that you give the players that canvas,” Wright says, “and let the players create the back story and the theme and whatever, and you focus on being innovative through the [game] mechanisms.” Second Life has come closer to that vision, though so far hasn’t been able to do so while reaching critical mass. But now Wright himself will have a hand in taking the vision into SL’s next generation. Whatever happens, I will say this: Will Wright joining the board of Linden Lab is the most hopeful sign for Second Life’s future that I have seen in the last couple years.

When he got the position and what he’s going to do with it is a dashed bit uncertain. When it is, we’ll be sure to cover it with a blanket and bring it to our place for an interview. In addition: I’m surprised there isn’t a press release anywhere. There must be some kind of conspiracy ؟

Edit:

  1. Because of the rush to post and my inner critic I choose to pick the above article as the story’s narration in lieu of me, who couldn’t have said it better than the above article did—or any of the other articles listed in the links for that matter.
  2. I’m expecting to add more edits as the story progresses, if it does.
  3. Apparently, Will’s been on board for about a month now.
  4. Peter Grey (of Linden Labs) releases the following official announcement: ‘We are thrilled to have a leader and pioneer of creative gaming and user-generated content join the Board of Linden Lab. His experience and insight will be incredibly valuable as we look to make the creativity that makes Second Life special today more easily and widely available.’

Caption Sims 3: Pets Pictures on The Cheezburger Network to Win Prizes

Alternative title: ‘Sims 3: Pets Pics + Captions + Prizes = Awesome.’

As with all Cheezburger sites, you submit a captioned version of an available photo or your own, and in this case: win prizes in the freak event of it being funny. There are contests every whatever amount of days, each with their respective prizes for the winner of said contest.

You must be a US citizen, or a Columbian, 18 years of age, to enter. FUUUUUUUU

Contest Name Entry Period Prize
(1) “Take Gaming To New Lands . . . Outside!” October 11, 2011-October 24, 2011 Outdoor movie screen, projector, inflatable couch and one copy of the Sims 3 game (Estimated Retail Value: $350.00).
(2) “Cut Out The Noise and GAME!” October 25 2011  – November 7, 2011 BOSE Noise Cancelling Headphones, an iTunes Gift Card and one copy of the Sims 3 game (Estimated Retail Value: $400.00).
(3) “Fill Your Own House with Items You Can Find in the Sims!” November 8, 2011 – November 20, 2011 Electronic fireplace, vintage record/compact disc player, a fake fish tank and one copy of the Sims 3 game (Estimated Retail Value: $460.00).

It seems that this contest is the making of Cheezburger inc. and not that of EA. Although EA would fit perfectly in a scheme trying to monetize humour/humor in today’s culture.

Create a Pet Jailbreak: Get Out of the CAP and Start Playing in Edit Town

Create-A-Pet Demo is actually a cutdown version of the full Pets Expansion. EA simply redirected the startup to go directly into CAS.

So, Twallan Nrass (which is an awesome name) released a jailbreak mod for the CAP demo. It tears it open and redirects it to the Edit Town, allowing you to almost play the game.

This mod redirects the game back to “Edit Town”, allowing you to see the Test World and place the animals you created in-game.

Note: Create-A-Pet is extremely limited. To keep the size down, EA did not provide any objects with the game, so any jig related interactions will fail (most socialization interactions require jig objects).

Essentially you can watch your pets frolic around, and do some self-targeted interactions. Something to keep you occupied for a couple more minutes really.

So not so much of a big deal, as I thought previously—yeah sorry bout’ that. Full Thread below:

This is a Create-A-Pet Demo compatible mod. Do not install this mod on your regular game.

You will need to have at least one human family in your Library folder, as you cannot place animals on a lot without a human supervisor, and cannot create humans in this Demo (and any human you place will be invisible, as human CAS parts were not provided).

There will be no further support for this mod.

Cheers. :)

SimFans Skype Transcript with Sims 3 Pets Producers

Daniel: A common question was looking for new places for Sims and animals for a romp. What are they and how does it work exactly with the puppies and foals?

Ryan: There are special houses for cats and dogs, where can have this affair. In horses this is something special. There are so stable that a new object, which can make two horses of different gender and a very good relationship “a bit of magic.” It then takes a few days and the foal is born. It looks and works just as normal Sims with a great animation. Foals and puppies will be personality traits of each one of the two parents. If you’ve created quite mad designed animals, you get really unique puppies and foals. It’s really fun to experiment with it. Sims also has a new place for an affair. It is disappearing at an Heustapel in the Sims. That looks really funny. I can not wait to experience the reactions of fans when they experience it themselves in play and see. I’m very happy!

Daniel: At The Sims 3 single animal for PC / Mac, there is a limited edition. These include the animal known to shop. What is this exactly? This pet shop is a Rabbit Hole, right?

Ryan: Actually, there is an entire community property, which is located at the animal shop. There are also a few variations of it.You will receive the Order of the Limited Edition one code you can redeem at The Sims 3 Store to download the site you can and then just can install in your world. And in this shop, there are just unique items that will only owners of the Limited Edition.

Daniel was single animal in the trailer for The Sims 3 video shown on the death of a horse, which rides through a portal or something of the kind. This animation it looks really cool. Is this just been a fun ride or death with this expansion pack really on a horse?

Ryan: That depends on which animal has died. Death gets the new phenomenon AddOn many ways. That depends on whether a cat, a dog or a horse has died. So if a horse dies, death comes ridden on a horse – This looks really great from what you’ve seen. I would not want to reveal too much, but the death of an animal is very great, and animated does not necessarily mean the abrupt end of an “animal-life.”

Daniel: On the gamescom I discovered this new “collection system”, which presumably allows objects in the sale and build mode to sort themselves into folders. Unfortunately it was on a course of gamescom still unfinished version of the game and that has not quite worked. This feature will be included in the final game and what you can do it all?

Ryan: We are delighted to bring this system from previous Sims games back (Note: The Sims 2) It’ll help with the organization of the objects. You can create folders with icons and sort the objects in it from the games and also incorporate objects from the store and custom objects, and so arranged as you wish, so you can find them quickly. Even with styles provided objects (eg, self-defined color of an object) can be stored in it and also if needed will be retrieved. This will of course be included in the final game.

PlatinumSims — The Sims 3: Pets Preview

Your pets can go on vacation!

If you have World Adventures, your pets can go with you on vacation. They cannot learn other skills there but can work on their usual skills.

On Tuesday 13th of September me and a few fellow Dutch Sim fans attended a Sims 3 Pets event, attended by producer George Pigula and international marketing manager Nicola Jenkins.

They showed us a Sims 3 Pets on console and PC presentation. Basically it was the same presentation we had seen at Gamescom. However two playthroughs in Sims 3 are never the same. If you want a general preview of Sims 3 Pets I suggest you go to: The Sims 3 Pets Preview (GamesCom)This preview will focus much more on minute details at the end of the article are long lists of pet traits, pet lifetime rewards, horse and dog breeds and the new Sim lifetime wishes.

We were told more information about the limited edition of Sims 3 Pets. Besides the Pet store selling accessories for your pet you can also buy different small animals in there, ones not present in the regular version of the EP.

And more…

SnootySims previews The Sims 3: Pets

Our good friends at SnootySims have just previewed The Sims 3: Pets PC version.

I started a new Sunset valley neighborhood and not Appaloosa Plains,, deliberately to see if all Pets stuff is also available in another neighborhood. One thing I noticed is that I didn’t see any wild horses or strays. Perhaps that takes time to spawn just like celebs when starting a new Neighborhood. Or perhaps they’re all in the woods, but I didn’t want to spend too much time searching the whole neighborhood as time was limited.

Since I recieved the most questions about the horses, I first started up Create-a-Sim. You can’t make a family of just horses so first you need to make a Sim. To start up Create-a-Pet, just click on the ‘add a new sim or pet’ button and there you pick either a Sim, horse, cat or dog. Then the background changes into a stable where you start with your horse. In the first tab, you need to choose a first and last name and choose between male or female. Also the age must be chosen here (adult or elder) In the second tab, you can pick a race. I counted 31 horse races.

In the next tab you choose the fur. You get a very versatile way to create everything you can come up with. You have several layers which each can get multiple colors. When you choose a layer, it’s just a small spot but you can strech it out over the horse where ever you want it to go. I must say that this is much more complicated then what you’re used to with the Sims Create-a-Style. It’s really getting used to and I expect some really crazy designs when the game is just out.

And more this way…
