MySims Series

CCC – MySims SkyHeroes for Nintendo Wii reviewed

For me, the overall vibe of MySims SkyHeroes is what makes it a winner. Though racing and dogfights are your only two real gameplay options, a lot of love obviously went into the game’s creation. Levels are a blast to explore, and the characters and art style have a quirky, lovable sense of humor. There’s enough room to eke out a good game of cat & mouse, yet the action always feels urgent due to the tightness of the level design.

VideoGamesDaily – MySims SkyHeroes review

A not-so-kind review on MySims SkyHeroes from VideoGamesDaily:

I feel a bit stupid for ragging on SkyHeroes. It’s not aimed at me, nor in all likelihood at you. It’s aimed at people old enough to hold a controller but not old enough to comprehend the basics of aviation, including the principle that a plane’s wings ought to extend further than the pilot’s hairdo.

It was never going to be clever, or challenging, or original, and you certainly didn’t need me to tell you that – just check out a trailer, or any of the other titles in this cynical little sub-series (actually, don’t bother with the second bit).

Evergeek – MySims SkyHeroes review

Anyway, for all its novelty and forthright charm, MySims Sky Heroes is essentially a generic pipsqueak kart racing game where chortling fatheads go zipping around extravagantly surreal courses shooting at each other’s tails, scooping up power-ups and lobbing one-timer smart bombs at each other if not dropping banana peel-like impediments behind them. Of course, instead of karts on a track you’re flying toy planes in the sky – a sky so tightly circumscribed by an invisible barrier as to not be the wild blue yonder but an aeronautical playground in a snow globe. Confining, in a word. Then again, with a target audience of, what, 8-year olds? Well, no one’s going to get lost, at least.

But where MySims SkyHeroes really marks the spot, it is in the variety of missions. Besides the aerial combat that you oppose to the enemy in an “arena” and racing single, you will have other types of missions that require you to pass in eg a maximum ring against opponents, or to mark the most points in a simulation of Quidditch! Six different types of missions against two in the home console versions, we can say that this is a real surprise. Suffice to say that the pleasure of this game is much less because we feel that repeating the same missions ever. Of course, as usual with the series of MySims, you have lots of options for customizing your character or your device. If changing your avatar’s hair does not affect the gameplay, each room in your unit has its own characteristics, in addition to aesthetic differences. Unlocked during the story mode, they quickly transform your clunker into a real fireball from the sky! You can interchange parts between each mission for speed, acceleration, control or shielding by what awaits you. In short, there really is plenty to do.

Electronic Theatre – indepth review of MySims SkyHeroes

It would be wrong to dismiss MySims SkyHeroes as a “casual” videogame release, as it proffers just as much depth as any similar kart-style racing game. However, its dressing is most certainly aimed at younger players, and having that in mind it’s impossible to understand why the developers chose to impose such a harsh difficulty on the story mode. Plenty of missions are available, so it’s not as if the developers needed to expand the game’s length artificially, and the Quick Play option is simply little substitute with no measurement of progression offered. MySims SkyHeroes is an enjoyable title, sitting comfortably next to SEGA’s Sonic & SEGA All-Star Racing as a significant competitor to Mario Kart Wii, but while its cartoon visuals and challenging gameplay have been designed as a one-fits-all solution, it may cause just as many problems as it solves.

JeuxVideo – MySims SkyHeroes reviewed

InfiniteSims spotted a new review of MySims SkyHeroes from french gaming site JeuxVideo.  A Google translated snippet is available below for your reading.

Apart from the missions, one of your favorite places will necessarily shed. Here you can change your Sims or your plane as you wish, and even before the start of the adventure. Of course, as and when the story mode, you unlock new customization features for your cuckoo, whether for the wings, the engine or the body of the device. Far from being aesthetic, these improvements can also have an impact on your features, increasing your speed or your strength. You can save several aircraft which is a good thing, the absence of such options that can decimate a sibling. Moreover, a multiplayer mode is also available for parties to many. If it is possible to play only two locally, it is not less than ten players who can put it online full cockpit! Large solitary can always make quick solo parts where almost all options are customizable, weapons allowed the number of turns. In the end, MySims SkyHeroes could be good entertainment if its gameplay was not that redundant solo. Fortunately, the parties in multi arouse enough interest to keep some players on their toes not to mention the many opportunities for customization of the aircraft. A title that will appeal probably sympathetic to younger, perhaps less jaded than average.

GamingXP – MySims SkyHeroes Review

German site, GamingXP took the time to extensively review the recently released, MySims SkyHeroes. Here is the summary translated by Google:

The atmosphere in the game itself is completely successful. The varied levels and the animations make you want more, but the lame story, and above all the countless mostly meaningless dialogue as well as Sim-babble but spoil much of the atmosphere.

All in all, I think that this “MySims” spin-off is ok, but does not reach its predecessors. Although the basic idea of the game is quite entertaining, but the story mode with the lame story, leaving out the possibilities of the Wii and the weak atmosphere cloud the overall impression huge.

CommonSenseMedia – MySims SkyHeroes reviewed

MySims Sky Heroes really soars. Its fast and frenetic gameplay is only enhanced by the colorful and imaginative visuals. The controls are relatively easy to handle, and the storyline is actually quite compelling. The customization system that allows you to build and personalize several vehicles for use in the game is definitely one of the highlights. You can not only customize (and re-customize) the looks of planes, but give each a different set of bonuses and special abilities that will help out in different kinds of missions.

The MySims series has put out several very good games, and Sky Heroes is no exception. It would have been nice if the player had more opportunities to simply fly around and explore the imaginatively-designed island settings, but the multiplayer modes (both co-op and competitive) are definitely a nice addition.
