(Mobile) SimCity

PocketGamer – SimCity Deluxe for mobile reviewed

EA Mobile hopes not as the objective in SimCity Deluxe remains unchanged from previous entries – build up a town from nothing except a wad of cash and some big ideas.

This is done by zoning areas of land for housing, commercial buildings and industry, as well as building public amenities like roads and hospitals for your resident sims.

As the city grows larger so the demands for jobs and housing increase, and the building of public services – not to mention your budget – requires clever management skills to keep everything ticking over.

Taking control of city hall

It sounds overwhelming but it’s a fairly smooth ride due to the large amount of advice dolled out by your friendly advisor lady who pops up on screen at regular intervals.

It doesn’t take very long to get into the swing of things, helped by controls that are logically laid out, with everything easily accessed through the various menus.

I did occasionally wish there was a way of assigning particular buildings to shortcuts, especially when it came to extended road building, but as the game pauses for placing new structures it didn’t end up affecting gameplay to a serious degree.

Along with the controls, EA Mobile has also done a good job of keeping the screen relatively clutter-free, with very little extraneous information obscuring the view of your city.

This gives you a good appreciation of the improved graphics, which posses a decent variety between the various different zones and a high level of incidental detail like smog clouds and traffic build-ups.

SimCity Deluxe (mobile) arrives on cellphones May 12, 2010

Simcity Deluxe (for mobile) has been planned to hit mobile phones on May 12, 2010. IntoMobile has presented this info in a new article:

The game is set to be released on May 12th and will most definitely hit all the major carriers’ decks within days (if not immediately).

Some additional information about the mobile game:

There are two modes to play – Freeplay and Scenario mode. The former removes all the restrictions allowing you to go beyond the wildest dreams. On the other hand, in the Scenario mode, there are pre-defined goals such as reaching a certain population level. SimCity Deluxe also comes with a brand new help system, which assist you in getting around every function of the game. Simple press 1, 2 or 3 – and a large animated head will appear to give you all the details.

PocketGamer – SimCity Deluxe for mobile preview

PocketGamer shares with us new details on EA’s SimCity Deluxe coming to mobile phones on May 12. Could an iPhone release be right around the corner? I sure hope so!

Having had a brief look at a near-finished build recently, this enhancement is most apparent in the game’s visuals. The familiar isometric viewpoint is sharper and more vibrant than before, with attractive touches such as shadows cast by clouds.

There’s also a hat-full of new animations to bring your city alive, such as aircraft buzzing around the skies. With the ability to enable disasters in Freeplay mode, we couldn’t resist asking if volcano activity inhibited this air travel at all. It seems it doesn’t, but EA is promising plenty of other neat features instead.

Aside from the aforementioned Freeplay mode, which allows you to build your city unrestrained, there’s a Scenario mode that reins in the freedom a little and gives you clearly defined goals (such as reaching a certain population level). It’s ideal for mobile play, as well as for introducing newcomers to this incredibly deep series.

SimCity Metropolis mobile game review

Once you’ve made your village into the metropolis of the title, a free-play mode is unlocked, allowing you to carry on building without any defined objectives. To an extent, this mode reveals quite how important the tight, objective-based structure is in the game.

After a while you may well find yourself tiring of simply optimising your city, but by then you’ll have had enough hours of fun to have lost the right to complain. It’s a symptom of the cut-down strategy that’s employed here – the relatively uncomplicated relationships between happiness, crime and pollution make the city appear more obviously algorithmic, and hence less organic, than the original game whose blueprint Metropolis uses.

PocketGamer – SimCity Metropolis (mobile) review

You’ve got a limited space to work with, and you need to balance out the city stats in order to complete each level’s objectives. Yes, although you’re working towards building one city, the game is still spread out into level-based chunks. In fact, most of the game dynamics are similar to last year’s SimCity Societies. In each game segment, you have certain objectives to achieve. You’ll need to get your population or one of the city stats up to a certain level, and you’re only given a set number of months in which to achieve this. You’ll generally have to make a new building or two, unlocked by completing the other objectives.

However, what Metropolis has over its socialist cousin is an excellent execution of the structure that made the original SimCity so compelling. Not only is the game split into levels, but there are also three separate islands that represent the residential, industrial and commercial ‘districts’ of the city. You’ll still get the chance to put down some grim-looking grey slabs in the residential district, just as you’ll need to build housing on the industrial island, but each has its own building set and general flavour. The residential zone has a pleasant green tileset, working its way down to a sludgy brown colour in the industrial sector.

PocketGamer interviews EA Mobile on SimCity Metropolis

If you love SimCity and own a mobile device capable of playing game, then head on over to EA Mobile’s website to pick up their latest game, SimCity Metropolis.  It’s only $2.99, not a bad price at all in my opinion.

Speaking of which, PocketGamer scored an interview with producer Olivier Proulx on the game:

Specifically, EA Mobile has released the first mobile-exclusive version of the famous city-planning franchise: SimCity Metropolis. It takes a lot of the good stuff from its predecessor SimCity Societies, and adds more depth, as producer Olivier Proulx tells us.

SimCity Societies was really a casual game when you think about it,” he says. “It was less about building a big city, and more about your management style and decisions, and the moral behind those decisions. With the new game, we wanted to get back to building a big city while keeping the casual gameplay that we think worked pretty well in Societies.”

The game sees your city evolve from a small town to a bustling metropolis (hence the name), and involves working through 18 scenarios, linked by an overarching storyline. You also get to play in three different districts of the city: Downtown, Industrial and Residential.

SimCity for Blackberry has been released

If I would of known about this, I would have posted it!  Again, I own no handheld devices (except for a DS) so I won’t get the pleasure of trying out SimCity for the Blackberry.  If you jump over to HandMark, you can download yourself a copy for your Blackberry for about $15.  In my opinion, it’s a little too expensive.  But then again, re-living the great days of SimCity 2000 or even getting the chance to play it (if you haven’t) might cut the deal.
