You know we had to post this. If there’s a chance for the Sims or SimCity to be included in a best of list, we’re there.
Viceland – interview with the guy who beat SimCity 3000
May 17th
We posted the video a few weeks back of a city from SimCity 3000 called Magnasanti which topped out 6 million residents – the total max you can get within the game’s original limit. Viceland tracked down the creator – Vincent Ocasla – for a special interview on the matter. I can’t believe that it took him 3 years to pull off…that’s dedication!
There are a lot of other problems in the city hidden under the illusion of order and greatness–suffocating air pollution, high unemployment, no fire stations, schools, or hospitals, a regimented lifestyle–this is the price that these sims pay for living in the city with the highest population. It’s a sick and twisted goal to strive towards. The ironic thing about it is the sims in Magnasanti tolerate it. They don’t rebel, or cause revolutions and social chaos. No one considers challenging the system by physical means since a hyper-efficient police state keeps them in line. They have all been successfully dumbed down, sickened with poor health, enslaved and mind-controlled just enough to keep this system going for thousands of years. 50,000 years to be exact. They are all imprisoned in space and time.
Why did it take a year-and-a-half just to complete the theory behind Magnasanti?
During the planning stage of the city I was also busy constructing other large-scale cities, which laid out much of the theory for Magnasanti. New ways of doing things were not yet developed until experiments were done within the game to verify ideas, and notes had to be taken down in conjunction with each new experiment, as well as devising new experiments to find out if there were better ways of solving the problem. Building cities and doing in-game experiments to obtain the results desired takes time. Additionally, I had other things to do, and only worked on it in my spare time, so it was a gradual development, not something I was working on 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.
SimCity 3000 – Magnasanti – 6 million residence
Apr 16th
This is very impressive. It appears that TheImperar is truly dedicated to SimCity 3000, as they have spent 3 years planning, drafting and finally designing a city to house 6 million residents. The video doesn’t show you much but it does show off the process of how it was built.
Ocean Quigley’s Projects: SimCity 3000 boxart
Apr 11th
Nothing too exciting, but Ocean Quigley – former EA worker, posted some information about the boxart design he created for SimCity 3000. The image he provides makes for an excellent wallpaper!
This was the interior box-art for SimCity 3000. We way overbuilt that geometry for how large it would ever appear in game, so it held up to print resolution just fine.
I’m particularly proud of the launch arco on the left; it’s a little white suburban house complete with a picket fence and a tricycle in the yard, all enclosed in Buck Rogers style rocket ship.
Oh, and the Battersea power plant from Animals came out nicely too.
Destructoid – How SimCity 3000 made me fall in love with Jazz
Feb 6th
I’m not speaking about myself but of Kraid over at Destructoid. He published an article earlier today about how SimCity 3000 introduced him to Jazz and how he became a fan of the genre. While I do find the music of SimCity 3000 to be enjoyable, I can’t really say I have the same opinion. I don’t mind Jazz but it isn’t something I care to listen to all the time.
Ten years ago I bought one of my favorite games of all time. I still play SimCity 3000 Unlimited every now and then like any other classics in my collection. Creating huge metropolis, challenging myself with weird urban designs and landscapes, I’ve always been fascinated by Will Wright’s series from the very beginning. One of the best aspects of the game however is the music, vilely infused with pure post Hard-Bop era smooth-jazz and some cool New Age Electronica.
It took me a long time however to finally realize that I had this secret love for Jazz. Prior to two or three years ago I had no idea who John Coltrane or Miles Davis were yet at the same time I knew these songs and rhymns. I was familiar with the specific era of which I am now a huge devoted fan.

Flashback: SimCity 3000 Unlimited Intro
Nov 10th
Never did get the unlimited version of SimCity 3000 – rather just the regular edition (is this intro in the regular version, I don’t recall it ever being there). Anyhow, I think it may actually be new to me. It’s pretty amazing to see how technology has evolved over the years
After reading the comments on the video, this is also shown on the screen of the Drive-In in SimCity 4. I love small details like this!
SimCity 3000 Music – grab the classic soundtrack for free
Oct 6th
Wow…I totally forgot this even existed! Simtropolis posted a note via twitter the other day to let fans know they can still pick up the complete soundtrack for SimCity 3000 at the official SimCity website. I love that music, so I’m downloading the tracks right now. Good timing too, because ‘TheSidDog’ contacted me earlier about the music for the game, and how it brought back memories for him as well. I was *this close* to purchasing it in iTunes…Now I don’t have to!

Bored? Bring the buildings from SimCity 3000 to real life!
Jul 26th
It’s a tad old but still an interesting find. The following user loves to model paper buildings in his spare time. He has quite a few of them, with some listed from SimCity 3000 :D You’re not left with looking at pictures either as he is also offering his plans to download so others can create their own crafts!
