Site progress

Just figured I’d chime in to let you know what the status is on the new design.  I’m currently working on a new design (well, modifying one that I picked up) and if things go well, it may be live within the next few weeks.  I have a few people lined up do help with the graphics.  Hopefully things will go well – it’s going to be a whole new look – new theme, new colors – a new beginning.  Some may like it, others may not.  All I can say is hopefully it’ll grow on you.

The best thing about doing all of this is it allows me to do a ton of work behind the scenes.  I tore up WordPress for the  past 2 years not using it the way I should have.  That’s going to change.  Pages are being organized and setup in order, categories already been split up by the game’s name, I’m actually using the ‘blogroll’ for affiliates rather than hardcode them, and of course, I’m using widgets for the sidebar/footer instead of coding them on their various pages.

Once the theme goes live – I’ll be going thru all pages structuring them better, getting the programs/patches back up to working order, and all of that good stuff!  So please be patient while I continue to work behind the scenes.  Standard updates may be slow for the next few weeks :)

SimPrograms turns 10, celebrates by…well nothing

Talk about walking into a birthday totally unprepared!  10 years is a long time, especially for a website dedicated to video games.  But here we are, officially turning 10 years old.  Normally this would be a huge milestone for anyone, planned out months in advanced…but as I stated earlier in the year – this is going to be a bumpy year for me taking care of personal matters and putting on the “big boy” shoes to step out in the world.

So, where do I begin in with my rambling thoughts…Ah.  Site improvements.  As you may have already noticed, the categories are getting overhauled.  I’m separating news into their own content fields.  For example, are you only interested in reading about Late Night?  What about The Sims Medieval?  Well, they are split up into their own games so just click the category link under each post title and you’ll be able to read all of the news pertaining to that subject.  This is still a work in progress and tweaking to it, but this should make it easier in terms of organization.  I’d like to thank Jinx from InfiniteSims for giving me a hand on this.

Next up, we have a new design in the works.  I can’t say much about it just yet, but machinima and graphic artist TheSidDog is currently underway working on a new theme for the site.

Once we get the new design worked out – all of the pages are going to be overhauled, possibly on a easier content management system then what we have now (pretty much nothing).  This is going to take the longest time to set up – mostly because I have a back log of programs, patches and tutorials to add.

Ummm…that’s pretty much it in a nutshell for the site’s progress.  Expect to see broken links in the meantime as I frantically switch the urls and the names of pages/categories around!

Now, real life issues – I can’t remember if I posted about this already, but if things go according to plan with my Realtor, the last few months of the year is going to be extremely busy.  I’m closing on a house at the end of next month, and they have a few major things they have to fix before I can move in.  So I’m playing the waiting game, but I pretty much think I’m locked into purchasing the house.  Of course, once I do I’m going to repaint it to my colors – so I don’t think I’ll have my stuff actually in the place until December or January of next year.  I’m eager to start working on setting up my Sims theme room and start doing podcasts :)

Last but not least, the thank you’s are due.  It’s hard to imagine that it has been 10 years.  This was such a tiny site back in 2000 hosting a couple of my personal programs for The Sims and a few custom downloads.  Now it appears to be one of the biggest and active sites in the Sims community (note, I’m not the bragging type, so please don’t take offense!).  I owe my gratitude and thanks to the staff – Simillions, Frankie, Luke S., and our tech guy, ManagerJosh.  I also want to thank the countless number of Sim fansites out there providing the great content and keeping up with the news.  And of course, our readers.  Without you, I’d pretty much be talking to myself…although I tend to do that anyways, so…yeah :)   Oh, and of course, we have EA.  Sure, they can be a pain in the rump at times, mess things up, make tons of mistakes…but in the end I’m addicted to their games – and you’re guilty of it too :P   What can I say, they make excellent games – when they work :D

8/9/10 – Site issues still occurring

***************** This post is a sticky *****************

It appears there are still a number of folks having issues with this site.  For me, everything appears to be normal and in working order, but I keep getting a number of complaints from those whose last update was on August 5th and cannot view any new updates.  I’m not sure if this is due to the fact that their ISP has yet to pick up the updated DNS information or if there is a glitch in the system.

If you are having any issues (for example you’re viewing this on a different computer, phone, etc. and you can’t view the updates on a different machine…please try clearing your cache and do a hard refresh (F5) on your browser.  Also, please pass that around if you know of anyone experiencing problems, I’d appreciate it very much :)

Tips you can do to view the latest updates:

  • Clear your browser’s cache
  • Do a hard refresh
  • Clear your DNS cache via going to your start menu, opening up ‘Command Prompt’ and type in “ipconfig /flushdns” (no quotes)

Let me know if this works/did not work for you.  If it didn’t, please let me know whats the latest post you can view on the main area of the site!

Thanks to ManagerJosh, the site has successfully migrated to our new servers.  There may be glitches, so let me know what the site is like on your end – hopefully the site performs faster for you!

8/5/10 – Possible site downtime today

Our new server has came in today and as far as I’m aware, this site is scheduled to move today to its faster, bigger and newer home.  So if it does go into effect please note you may not be able to access this site.  Don’t worry, our tech guy – ManagerJosh - is on the case and he’s pretty good at setting this up.  We’ll be back soon *keeps fingers crossed*

Life update – wow it’s hectic trying to buy a house!

Well, good news.  A house in my neighborhood has popped up on the market and after checking it out, the style and funds both match what I am looking for :)   So I’m in the process of talking with the Realtor and by tomorrow, should be able to negotiate a contract.  The asking price is $57,500 but I’m going to try to talk them down to $54,000 + all closing expenses.

I don’t happen to have any pictures of the house on me at this moment…I’ll snap some tomorrow if weather will let me.

Other news – the site.  Not sure what the status is on our new servers.  Supposedly now they said we’ll be moved to the new servers this week, but I highly doubt it.  We (SimPrograms and WorldSims / UEOM) may wind up having to buy our own servers…and if that does happen, then I’ll probably wind up putting a donation button strictly to cover the site’s costs.

So yeah…real life is getting crazy at the moment, so I do apologize for lack of updates and outdated pages.

Well folks, that about wraps up all of the backlog of news that I have.  Hopefully later on tomorrow night I can take care of the backlog of affiliates request.  I’ll be going on a trip tomorrow so no updates until later in the evening!  I do have some new topics to discover, but I’ll save that for sometime next week.  :)   Enjoy this video as it should put a smile on your face!

LOL: We get more visitors then CitiesXL!

I’m going to laugh all day about this.  :)   It appears this site gets more visitors then the official CitiesXL.com site (which is a Sim City like game). LOL :D

Does this mean if we sold a Game, We'd have more Success? :D

I haven’t tried SimCity Societies’s Website vs Simprograms yet, But I bet that’ll have a funny result too!

*Note from Jud* – Thanks, Simillion for sharing this…I do not keep up with the sites stats so in all honesty, I do not know how successful this site is.  Thus, this allows me to take a moment and to give my thanks to you, Luke, Frankie, our tech guy ManagerJosh and the hundreds of readers out there.  You all make this site possible and I thank every single one of you for that!
