(DS) Spore Creatures
Spore Creatures DS – commercial
Oct 23rd
Here’s a commercial for Spore Creatures that I stumpled upon over at Dennis DeMercer’s blog. It seems he played a part in the animation/drawings of this commercial. It’s new to me and it deserves a post
Interview with J.C. Connors on Spore Creatures (DS)
Sep 15th
DS Fanboy published an interview with Griptonite Game’s studio head, J.C. Connors. I thought the game was created in-house by Maxis, so this is a surprise to me! So I guess this is the reason why the handheld games don’t do too well…Here are a few questions from the interview:
DSF: Did you have much interaction with the main Spore team?
Conners: Yes – we have a great relationship with Maxis. We’ve worked with them for years now, dating back to The Sims: Bustin’ Out on GBA. Our teams share ideas constantly, and it’s always fun to see which ways we influence each other.
DSF: Were there any other influences on the design of Spore Creatures other than Spore itself?
Conners: There were definitely some artistic influences on the look of the game that differed greatly from the PC version. Early on, Maxis and Griptonite decided to take a more “shadowbox” approach to the creature design. Not only did this approach use the DS’s horsepower better, but it made the game stand out from the PC game.
A decent ‘Spore Creatures (DS)’ review from Vooks

In the end, Spore Creatures is a respectable translation of the PC version. The game certainly doesn’t set any new benchmarks in regards to sim/action gaming, and although the objectives can get a little stale at times, there’s always reason to keep playing. It’s a very accessible title that is easily played in short spurts. It’s also easy to waste away a few hours exploring the planets and collecting parts. Though it might not be without its flaws, the positives certainly outweigh the negatives and it is easy to recommend Spore.
N-Europe reviews Spore Creatures (DS)

Pros:
- Quirky style which suits the DS perfectly
- Creature creator is initially great fun
Cons:
- Feels like a poor man’s alternative to original
- Repetition eventually kills all enjoyment

Outside of the (somewhat) limited creativity encouraged by the creature creator, Creatures does very little to encourage outside-of-the-box thinking or gameplay. The game’s story is short and very linear, with a few side missions that reward the player with additional creature parts.
Why is Spore Creatures selling so poorly?
Sep 11th
Where is the love for Spore Creatures for the DS? Granted I haven’t picked up a copy myself, I had planned to. But many, many reviews are lashing at it giving the game poor ratings. I still want to grab the game, but with all of the bad press it has been getting, it’s bound to end up in the bargin bins soon…And I love saving money!
UK – Grab Spore Creatures for cheap at your local Morrison’s

If you live in the UK and are tempted to pick up Spore Creatures for the Nintendo DS, then head on over to your local Morrison’s supermarket – assuming that you got one. They are selling many games for pretty cheap prices – Titles such as Tiger Woods, Mercenaries 2 and Spore Creatures are all marked off at a huge discount, with EA’s three big hits selling for £15, £25 and £12.99.
You better act fast though! According to Morrison’s, this is just a first of many promotions to come.

Spore Creatures features a colorful, attractive visual design paired with cute sound effects and a laid-back, spacey soundtrack. It also features some of the PC version’s online connectivity, albeit in an extremely stripped-down form. In this case, you can download other players’ creatures, which then appear within your own game as you explore. This is a neat addition, though its limited scope doesn’t give Spore Creatures much additional replay value. But no matter: On its own, Spore Creatures is still a cute–if not particularly memorable–adventure game.

I came so close to picking up Spore Creatures for the DS when I bought the Galactic Edition…but that Artbook was too tempting, and it was a steal at the price I got it at! But I will try to pickup the game in the future! For those that already bought it and need a little guidance, then visit IGN’s Spore Creatures Guide.
Special thanks goes out to one of my favorite Spore sites, Spores Illustrated!
