(PC) Spore Islands
Spore Islands Facebook game to end its run
Jun 4th
Sad news to report. The official Spore game on Facebook – Spore Islands – will be shutting down the game’s server early in July. Such a shame as I still play that game everyday – in the morning and evening. As of right now I hold the 5th spot for global rating and the 10th spot for global points. All good things have to come to an end, wish they could keep it up as it’s pretty much the only game I play on FB.
Public Static – Spore Islands Cheats, Tips, and Tricks
Nov 18th
- You don’t necessarily have to be the top of the food chain. If you can reproduce faster than your predators can eat you, you will still win in dominance.
- Using only one source of food is very risky, specially in crowded maps of Spore island.
- Fastest way to accumulate points is to appoint friends who can design “food” creatures for yours. To be fair, you can also design “food” creatures for them. Food creatures are badly designed creatures that can be eaten by your creatures as additional sources of food, all the while ensuring they do not compete with your creatures in terms of resources (make them eat rare herbs for example)
- If you’re going for top predator, you can lower the sensitivity to danger to just one, because if anybody attacks you, you can always just annihilate them. Increase food/spark sensitivity instead.
- When building noncarnivores, go for either the extremity of defense or speed. Speed works well with fast multiplication and light weight. Kinda like real life.
- Lots of friends = more diversity = more points for all. So keep inviting people to your island.
Words of the wise, I must say. Considering I’m pretty much addicted to this game, I’d figure these above tips would be useful. So far my 4 creatures have net me a half a million points and 2 trophies. Looking at the game’s stats, there is a player who has 16 million points and one who has 7 trophies! I have a lot of catching up to do!
Thanks to Public Static for providing the above tricks and hints!
IGN previews facebook’s Spore Islands
Nov 12th
Well, I had to start my Spore Islands game all over again, but the good news is that I’m nearing what I used to have. I won’t be stupid this time and remove the game from my applications. IGN spent some time with the facebook game and shares their impressions. It’s a short read, but if you have nothing better to do, check it out then play the game!
“Evolve, Survive, Party” is Spore Islands’ slogan, and that pretty much sums up the game-play. Waiting for time to pass so you can gain new tokens means Spore Island is a game you can easily leave for hours at a time, but once your friends start getting in to it, you’ll want to be on more often to make sure your creature is primed and ready to dominate your friends’ islands.

SimOperation’s impressions on Spore Islands
Nov 9th
SimOperations brings a small editorial about the new buzz all over facebook – Spore Islands! Here’s a brief portion of Connor’s article:
A main difference with Spore Islands as opposed to its PC counterpart is that the game is based around observing rather than playing. In lieu of traditional first person play, one can watch creatures competing each other in a fairly pacman style of play. One can also see the levels of other creatures in the arena. It’s a very interesting approach yet is quite addictive!
Inside Social Games – Spore grows on to Facebook
Nov 8th
I’m so mad at myself! I removed Spore Islands from my applications block as I wanted to correct a few issues that I’ve been dealing with recently on this machine. However, little did I know (I don’t do much gaming on Facebook) it would take away all of my data :( Lesson learned, I suppose…
As is to be expected of Maxis games (they are the developers behind The Sims, after all), Spore Islands really is a nice and well made app. If there is any one complaint, it is that the customization was one of the most fun elements in the original game. Nonetheless, Maxis does do their best to circumvent the limitation by adding a few new concepts such as nifty hats and animations (at the cost of DNA), in an attempt to create greater personalization.

Games.com – Interview with ‘Spore Islands’ creators Caryl Shaw & Frank Lantz
Nov 5th
Have you tried your hand at Spore Islands on Facebook yet? I’ve been playing the beta for the past month, it’s a pretty good web based app and a fun time-waster at work (during break, of course!) If you’re curious about why the game was designed and the decisions behind the limitations, check out Games.com for an interview with two of its creators – Caryl Shaw and Frank Lantz.
Spore Islands is drastically different from other Spore-inspired efforts that we’ve seen on Facebook. Why the change?
Caryl Shaw: In the past, Spore has focused on using Facebook to educate people about our PC game. With Spore Islands we actually wanted to create a social game based on Spore that was fun and used the opportunities for connecting with your friends that Facebook offers.
Frank Lantz : We wanted to take the essence of Spore – creating and evolving your own creature – and find an expression of it that was “native” to the social setting of Facebook.
For hardened players of Spore on Mac and PC, what do you think they’ll get from playing Spore Islands? As such, what might Spore Hero players gain from playing?
Shaw: The thing that I like best about playing Spore Islands (and I’m definitely a hardened Spore player having been on the team for almost 5 years) is that I can send my creature off to play with my friend’s creatures. I have been going back and forth with my Associate Producer Meghan all week – she evolves the Bobbinator and overtakes me on my Island and then I update Killer (my creature) and clobber her back. It’s been really fun to play Spore with someone else.
Lantz : It’s all about the social interaction. One of the coolest things about Spore is the way it integrates user-generated content, in Spore Islands the user-generated content is the gameplay – you’re always adapting your creature to stay one step ahead of your friend’s creatures, and they’re adapting their creatures to stay one step ahead of you.
Spore Franchise Launches First Game on Facebook Platform – ‘Spore Islands’
Nov 5th
Spore Islands isn’t that bad of a game. I often play it whenever I log onto Facebook and have a minute – its kind of addicting. However, my biggest issue is the fact that you max out with 12 DNA points. If you want more, you’ll have to break out your wallet. I can’t fault Maxis/EA on this one – it appears many Facebook games do it. It just kills the gameplay for me though – I’m not paying to play an online flash web-game, not matter how cool it is. It’s just stupid in my opinion.

EMERYVILLE, Calif.–(BUSINESS WIRE)–Maxis™, an Electronic Arts Inc. (NASDAQ: ERTS – News) studio, today announced they have taken their renowned integration of social connectivity to the next level with a fun and original game application built on Facebook® Platform, Spore™ Islands. Now available, Spore Islands invites Facebook users to experience the Spore universe in a new way by competing against each other in the ultimate survival of the fittest game.
“In Spore Islands, players get to invite friends in their social web to play on their island, so creating this game exclusively for Facebook was a natural choice for us since they are the largest and most popular social platform for games,” stated Caryl Shaw, Senior Producer, Spore Islands. “What sets Spore Islands apart from other social games is that it offers a different kind of social interactivity where a player’s gameplay experience is directly affected by the choices and decisions their friends make. It’s an ongoing game, so player’s creatures and islands will be active at all times, whether the player is logged into Facebook or not.”
“Games are one of the most popular activities on Facebook, with more than 100 million unique active users in the top 10 games alone. We are excited to see Spore Islands as one of the latest games on Facebook for our 300 million users to connect, share and play with friends,” said Facebook Platform Manager Gareth Davis.
Spore Islands, a simulation game set in a vibrant, playful 2D world, is one of the first games developed and published by Electronic Arts Inc. on Facebook Platform and based on an established franchise. Focused on player-to-player interaction, users choose their own island to live on, create creatures and evolve them, invite friends to live on their island, and send their own creatures to friends’ islands, all in a quest to dominate as many islands as possible. In Spore Islands, much like in other Spore games, parts matter. Throughout the game, players can earn and purchase DNA points that they can use to modify their creature’s stats or customize their creature’s appearance with fun accessories such as hats, animations, holiday-themed items, and more. Players’ progress is tracked on both Global and a Friends-only leaderboards, which can be viewed by players and their friends, upping the ante in the race to the top of the food chain.

EA/Maxis conquers Facebook with Spore Islands
Oct 21st
This is a complete surprise and totally out of the blue. Apparently there is a beta going on about a new game on Facebook based on EA/Maxis’ Spore games. Titled ‘Spore Islands‘, you take control of a virtual island where you create creatures to survive, reproduce and dominate. You can observe your creature which will show you how it fared against the others…however the observations are limited per day, with the chance to watch a new one every 4 hours. However, during the observations you can upgrade your creatures stats, abilities, accessories and more using DNA tokens. Those can be earned over time or paying with real money (I can’t believe people pay for stuff on Facebook by the way…)
Essentially, a slideshow, or an “observation”, lets you watch how your species fared against others on your island. You have a limited number of observations per day, though, and you can watch a new one every four hours.
In between observations, you can upgrade your creatures attributes (e.g. stamina, strength), abilities, diet, animations, and accessories (hats, horns, markings) with DNA tokens, which you either earn over time or purchase with real money.
