Reviews

Despite the game’s interesting surroundings, there’s little about The Sims 3 World Adventures that makes the game as exciting as actually flying around the world. Characters still babble in lovable but familiar Simlish. Your Sim will still throw a tantrum about using the toilet when you want to go and see the Sphinx. And even though your Sim might wander off the path well-traveled by tourists (ours found the entrance to some undiscovered ruins, netting some cool reward cash), you’re informed of these side trips through a text message, not through any kind of visuals.

The Sims 3 World Adventures has a few intriguing ideas, but they’re half-baked. There is, for instance, an air sickness minigame that involves keeping the picture in focus while the plane is in flight. If you manage to keep things clear by using the iPhone’s tilt function, your Sim will arrive at its destination as fresh as a daisy. If you screw up– and it’s very easy to screw up– your Sim will be a pukey, grumpy mess and you’ll waste a lot of time getting it cleaned up and into bed. If time is tight and you’re due back at your job, disaster is inevitable.

Graphics on The Sims 3 World Adventures hits the mark with its attention to detail. Buildings, maps, locations have all been meticulously rendered to produce the same quality in detail as you would find on the pc version of the franchise. Background noise and music are fully adapted to the specific part of the world you’re in. You also have the added option of playing music from your own iPod collection when stumbling onto a stereo wherever you go. Controls are all done by touch, as explained by a quick instructional run through. The only exception to the touch controls would be the in-flight mini-game where you will need to use the device’s accelerometer by tilting the device to keep from getting airsick.

Far too much of your time is spent on domestic activities rather than exploring the new locations and accompanying goals. In other words, it carries too much of the baggage from the original game.

When you do arrive at one the game’s much-hyped destinations, there are sights to see and locals to chat up. Each decently sized location has its own unique activities like visiting the Sphinx, socialising with Chinese natives, or learning French cuisine. Touring the Arc de Triomphe, for instance, involves watching a scripted slide show with superimposed images of your sim in weird poses accompanied by historical facts.

It’s an opportunity lost – why not allow sightseeing in which your sim can take photos that are saved to your device’s camera roll, which can then be shared with friends?

PocketGamer reviews The Sims 3 World Adventures

The biggest difference in World Adventures is the scope of the game with added locations that you can travel to. If you loved the gameplay of the original but felt the original Sims 3‘s world was a bit small, this version is for you. Beyond your own town, there are 3 additional locations including Egypt, France and China. Each location has its own buildings, inhabitants, goals and tourist attractions. Also included are 52 new goals and 4 new mini-games. The mini games include ruin exploration, air flight, bartering and language games. Succeeding in these mini-games help you along the way. For example, the in flight mini game prevents you from getting air sick which will suck up valuable time at your destination while you recoup. Meanwhile better language skills add to your charm, improving your interaction with others.

There’s no four hour wait in the airport, no watching everyone else’s baggage do more laps on the conveyor than Jenson Button does in a Grand Prix, and no cramp-inducing seating if you are anything above 3-feet tall.

Instead, should you travel second class, is a mini-game requiring you to tilt your iPhone until the scene from the window is no longer blurred; in first class, you don’t even need to do that before touchdown.

The downside is you would be tied to where you could go. However, Al Simhara (Egypt), Champs Le Sims (France) and Shang Simla (China) all sound like nice enough places, and each one is true to the country’s culture it resides in.

So if your Sim is in Shang Simla, you can happily send him or her round the Wall of China and other tourist attractions unique to that country. The reward is an educational fact overlaying a picture, a far cry from the exhilaration of the real experience but a reward nonetheless.

Previews

In World Adventures, your home town of Sunset Valley has received an upgrade. You can now visit a nearby museum, which will house any artifacts you sell them from your travels, and an airport, which will whisk you away to Sim versions of Egypt, China, and France. When you buy your plane ticket, you can spring for the cheaper economy class or the pricey first class, and it will make a difference in your flight. If you fly cheap, you’ll have to play a motion-sickness minigame that involves tilting the phone to keep the airplane’s window in focus. If you fail, your Sim will arrive sick and tired.

There are three other minigames in exotic lands as well: Bartering, tomb exploration, and overcoming the language barrier. Each new location also has a monument to see, like the Great Wall or Eiffel Tower, and visiting these will give you real-world historical trivia and a montage of your Sim happily snapping pictures.

Three international destinations are being introduced: Al Simhara, Champs Les Sims, and Shang SimLa. Each comes with unique scenarios and items. In Al Simhara, for instance, you may encounter a mummy should you be wandering around at night.

While these are intriguing additions, Taber noted that the biggest change involves your sim’s home town. “The biggest thing we did was remake the central town to improve the layout.”

Customisation was a high priority, and so new options for your sim – three new face options apiece for male and female sims, along with new clothing – are offered. “Expanding customisation was high on our priority list,” says Taber.

Your Sims are looking to stretch their legs and get out of the sparse town they habit on your iPhone. With The Sims 3: World Adventures, you’ll be able to take your sims to Egypt, France, and China—just like in the full Mac version. These locations will present new sights to explore, dangers to confront, and adventures to tackle. Fifty-two new goals and four new mini-games are available to unlock and the new areas promise to give players more variety of gameplay than the simple town offered in the original Sims 3. Additionally, you’ll have access to new clothing styles, furniture selections, and face types to further diversify your paper doll-like sims.
