Macintosh Programs

These tools should work if you have The Sims or its expansions for the PC. They are for Macintosh computers only and they will allow you to…do different things (read their descriptions :P) for The Sims.. To download the files, you may either click the ‘Download Here’ button to start the process or you may be directed to a specific site where you can download it from there. You can also view a larger picture of the program by clicking on the thumbnail image provided.

If you happen to come by a broken link or you see a tool that is not listed here, please use our contact form and notify us about it!

Before you download: We are in no way responsible for the patches or programs on this site in terms on how they may effect gameplay. All of the files hosted on our site are virus free so you shouldn’t experience any issues on that matter, however some downloads may modify how the game performs or a game’s files. For the most part, we may not be able to help troubleshoot any problems with programs and/or patches. Also, please keep in mind that these are incredibly old, so its possibly that they may not run on your current operating system and they are no longer supported by their creators. Thanks for understanding!

FarMaker

Creator: Dave Baum
Source: FarMaker Homepage

For Mac Computers only! This special utility, FarMaker, is used to create .far files from a folder of individual files. There is also a companion utility, Unzipper, which expands ZIP files and maintains any long filenames in the comments field of the Finder information. FarMaker then makes use of these comments to ensure that the .far file has the full entry names rather than filenames that have been truncated to the Macintosh’s 31 character limit.

Both utilities are freeware and have been only minimally tested. They don’t even have icons yet!

FarSight

Download: Click here (OS 8 & 9) | Click here (OS X) (right click & save as)
Creator: Joe Strout
Source: FarSight Homepage

For Mac Computers only! FarSight lets you browse the contents of a FAR archive, and extract any item into its own separate file. It will even preview most BMP files for you (but it will extract any file at all). You can then use your favorite editing tools (I recommend GraphicConverter) to edit these files to your heart’s content, or replace them completely.

Then, here’s the neat bit. The clever folks at Maxis designed their game such that, if a file with the name they’re looking for exists in the same folder as the FAR file, it will use that file rather than the one in the FAR. So, to override a particular texture, just extract it into the same folder as the FAR it came from, edit it, and leave it there. If you later get sick of it, just delete that file, and the game will resume using the one in the FAR archive.

IFF Taxi

Creator: Cherie Benoit

For Mac Computers only! iff Taxi is a utility for making The Sims IFF object files available to the downtown buy mode of the Hot Date expansion pack. Registered versions of iff Taxi have batch capability so you can make even a large collection of downloaded objects downtown-ready within several minutes instead of several hours.

IFFSnooper

Download: Click here (OS 9) | Click here (OS X) (right click & save as)
Creator: Peter Gould
Source: IFFSnooper Homepage

For Mac Computers only! IFFSnooper will open up an IFF file (usually identifiable in the Finder by the .iff file extension) and display some of the resources.

IFFSnooper can also open up wall files (.wll files), floor files (.flr files) and .FAM files since these are all IFF files with alternate file extensions.

NameRectifier

Download: Click here (right click & save as)
Creator: Dom
Source: Around the Sims

For Mac Computers only! On Mac OS 8 or 9, sometimes, we have objects that don’t end with the .iff suffix, because it has been cut due to the Mac’s limitation to 31 characters, so we have “.” or “.i”, or anything at all, and these objects won’t work in our game. It can be long and boring to rename a full folder of truncated names files… But NameRectifier is here! Sometimes, you download several times the same object, and you have in your Downloads folder “objects.iff, object.iff.1, object.iff.2″. NameRectifier will help you to get rid of these double files.

Skins & Mesh Renamer

For Mac Computers only! Since Hot Date, some skins can be bought in Downtown or on Vacations island, as formal wear, winter, swimming-suit, lingerie… To make your old skins available for Hot Date (or new ones that aren’t converted, or… whatever you want! ;)), you need two things:

1.) Renaming the .BMP files to change the first letter of the name; it’s pretty easy to do manually, but when you have hundreds of skins, it’s nice to have a tool to automates the task; it’s SkinRenamer’s job.

2.) Renaming the matching meshes (.CMX), as skins need both .BMP (the texture) and .CMX (the mesh, ie the shape of the body and the clothing). It’s MeshRenamer’s job.

SkinShrinker

Download: Click here (right click & save as)
Creator: Cherie Benoit
Source: MacUpdate

For Mac Computers only! Download scads of new meshes for “The Sims”? Hate the fact that nearly all of the filenames are too long for use on the Macintosh? SkinShrinker is a free drag-and-drop utility that will rename mesh (CMX and SKN) and texture (BMP) files for you, including “buyable outfits” and cat and dog skins.

Batch rename those new Sim outfits with SkinShrinker. Just create a new folder, place your newly downloaded skin folders in it, and drop the folder onto SkinShrinker’s icon in the Finder.

SkinShrinker looks inside CMX files and checks the names of the referenced SKN files. If any need changing it locates and renames them. Then it edits the CMX to match. SkinShrinker will also shorten the CMX’s filename, if necessary. SkinShrinker can also be used to edit the CMX and SKN files that accompany some objects. BMP files are checked individually by name. Filenames are shortened and “.bmp” file extensions are added, if necessary.

Sims Guid Checker

Download: Click here (OS 8 & 9) | Click here (OS X) (right click & save as)
Creator: Dom
Source: Around the Sims

For Mac Computers only! It checks a selected folder and its subfolders to see if there’s a conflict with IDs (if two ID are the same) between objects (it looks inside .IFF and .FAR), and if there’s a conflict, it lets you edit the GUID of one of the objects.
