Codex

Download: Click here
Creator: k200406
Source: Simprograms

Codex is an advance object editor, based off of Edith. The most obvious difference between Codex and other object editing utilities is its BHAV editor, which presents SimAntics scripts in the visual flowchart style in which the language was meant to be coded.

For a guide to coding in this style, seek out the online course material for the computer game design class Ken Forbus taught at Northwestern University, which is still on the Web somewhere. It comes with a tutorial on Edith, Maxis’ internal development tool.

Codex is not Edith, but the BHAV editor is modeled on what’s presented in this tutorial, and on a video of Edith in action that Sims programmer Don Hopkins made available online.

Constant Contraption

Download: Click here
Creator: Tom Van Dijk
Source: Simprograms

This program is capable of editing Behavioral Constants. Behavioral Constants are values that are used in the game. The programmers who make objects decided that certain values (like -100 or 596) are not stored in the script but in a separate resource, the BCON resource. It is easier to fine-tune an object that way and the Edith program they use allows to add comments. I’ve decoded the TRCN resource, that handles these comments / descriptions partly and have created this program for you.

It can edit the values as well as the descriptions. I suggest someone makes a website or something about these constants, I’m sure its worth the effort, as the programmers at Maxis decided to remove all comments before shipping the game. One can clone an object and edit the Behavioral Constants with this tool to increase the comfort of a chair, by example, or change the number of times an alarm clock rings.

Guid Getter

Creator: Judhudson
Source: Simprograms

This program I created retrieves GUIDs from objects. This is extremely useful for object hackers to look for GUIDs so they can change them in another program. It’s now been updated with a much nicer look. It can even retrieve the original GUIDs that the object was cloned from! Please note: The program does NOT like hacked objects, it will freeze up on them, it’s only meant to be used on Non-Hacked objects.

SST means Scripted SimAntics Translator and it’s a self-made scripting language that is completely written for effective translation of SimAntics code to readable stuff. The fun of it is that you can edit it yourself.

Strings Scavenger

Download: Click here
Creator: Tom Van Dijk
Source: Simprograms

The Strings Scavenger is a program to edit the Behavioral Strings (STR# resources). These strings, which are in fact texts or some words, are used everywhere in the game. They are mostly used by the scripting code, for instance for the texts and titles of the blue message boxes in the game, or for the animations.

Usually, the “Dialog Prim String Set” resource is used for titles and texts of message boxes. There are multiple resources for the animations. For example, “a2o” (Adult To Object) is used for animations of adult persons that use the object and “c2o” (Child To Object) is used for children that use the object.

This program is rather simple to use. When you open a file, it will show a list of resources and the user can select a resource to display the information. There are three “groups” in the program. The “Properties” group is for more advanced people and if you simply edit strings, it won’t be necessary to change these. The “Strings” group lists all available strings and allows you to select one to edit it in the “Editing” group. I did not add possibilities for adding and deleting strings. Just like Constant Contraption, this program was build to allow the user to edit existing objects and do some fine-tuning. Adding strings won’t be needed. It will be available in new versions of IFF Pencil.

Note: you only need to be concerned about languages when the string you are editing is displayed in the game. These are usually the MakeMenu and the Dialog strings.

TransPatcher 2

Download: Click here
Creator: Tom Van Dijk
Source: Simprograms

This is a little tool which you can fix the odd colors in Vacation and Unleashed with. This is caused by some problems in the Sprite (SPR2) resources. The symptoms show up after cloning and this program is designed to solve the problem either automatically or manually. Most of the time you should use “Quick Patch” so the default palette is used. (If the item-specific palette can’t be found, the default or common palette for that SPR2 resource is used.)

In some cases the specific palettes are needed and in other you want to manually change the palettes. For these things you can use TransPatcher 2. (Maybe it should be called Palette Changer)
